NM John Blackstone would like to invite you to a rip-snorter after Christmas. It is the Chess Renaissance which will be held at the Hotel Davenport in Davenport, Iowa–Aug. 18th-20th, 2017.
The hotel will probably have a name change before then, but they have already been sprucing it up (and it looks great).
Last night I asked John for a reason to get Californians to our Chess Renaissance and the first thing his quick thinking brain came up with was a NO EARTHQUAKES VACATION! Kind of impressive. Davenport, Iowa is almost in the center of the USA, convenience from anywhere.
WHY SHOULD YOU COME?
•GRANDMASTER OF FUNNY, SIMON WILLIAMS
•THE CHESS SWAP MEET OF ALL TIMES
•THE $50 AND UP CHESS AUCTION
•ROOMS FOR $63 A NIGHT!!–THE BEST EVER!
•NO CROWDING — ROOM FOR 45!!
•ONLY $150 (SAVE!, GET IT FOR $100 BEFORE MARCH 15)
•$25 SIMULTANEOUS ($20 before March 15)
• A FEAST OF BOOKS, ALL THE GOOD STUFF + DVDs
Then I asked John for a reason to get Floridians to our Chess Renaissance and the second thing his quick thinking brain came up with was NO HURRICANES! Our Radisson umbrella Hotel is loaded with A/C, a huge Pool, and a Restaurant for Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner at prices that made me wonder if we were in a the 1970s!
They did not require a block of rooms to be reserved so I would STRONGLY encourage you to call 1-877-325-7666 right away as there is an Antique Auto Show that same weekend. Do you want the LOW, LOW, LOW room rate of $63 per night (virtually unheard of these days. Well you have to know the PASSWORD. You’re gonna love this, it’s P-Q4 because the manager IS a chess player!! When have you ever heard that?
So far we have registered guests coming from California, possibly Washington, Michigan, Kentucky, Missouri, and yes, even several from Iowa! (Home of Louis Paulsen!) We’re counting on you to show up from Texas, Florida, Illinois, Nebraska, Minnesota, and many other places. Everyone tells me this will be a success. Will it? Only if YOU come!
As unusual as this may sound to out of Iowa-staters one of Iowa’s BIGGEST industries is tourism!! Totally awesome in the summer and fall.
Be sure to call 1-877-325-7666 right away. They will have King size beds, Queens, Indoor Fun Center, Fitness Center and many more accommodations. Even bedrooms with jacuzzis. A Business Center and one thing many of you will like, Complimentary Shuttle to and from the Quad City (Moline International) Airport. Tip your driver if you are happy with the service (and I bet you will be.
Consider staying an extra day or two as there’s tons of things to do in our Metro Area including the huge NorthPark Mall, the Putnam Museum, the Figge Art Museum and Theaters and MultiPlexes on both sides of the River. Our Parks are fantastic too as are the Channel Cat ferry rides on the big Mississippi River (one of the top tourist sites of the world). Lunch at Lagomarcinos is out of this world and suppertime at the 11th Street Precinct is fabuloso–I eat there a lot with guests.
Since 1998 we have been holding chess events in this bustling but not too crowded Metropolitan Area. Guests have even told me they wouldn’t mind living here.
The address is 5202 Brady Street, Davenport, Iowa 52806. That number 1-877-325-7666.
DO YOU REALIZE IT’S ONLY 8 MONTHS AWAY?
In the 1950s Davenport was the home of the Trans-Mississippi Open, one of the largest chess tournaments in the USA! If you need more information, want to register, and have a fantastic time this summer, call Bob Long at 563-271-6657. If we fill up, which is a distinct possibility, there won’t be additional spaces available in the cozy Palmer Room.
Why Does John Blackstone Matter?
John is a friend of mine since 1969. He was a former California State Junior Chess Champion (I just found this out this year!). He has a massive chess library and is a student of chess history. We have visited each other several times and many times for long conversations on the phone. He’s one of the great story-tellers. And like many of us, he followed the World Chess Championship on the internet. Maybe he can be coaxed to come.
On Friday night (August 18) early registrants will meet at Schooner’s (the Hotel Davenport’s bar) with Simon Williams and you can relax and enjoy the Not-So-Simple Simon with a beer or ale.
Today I checked the food menu and it was impressive and impressively affordable. That’s the kind of thing the Midwest is known for: Modest prices, friendly people, and great accommodations!
Bob Long (me) will be there. Backed by more than 50 years of experience in the business of chess, I will welcome you with outthrust arms to an event of FUN, and LEARNING something from the Grand Maestro, Simon Kim Williams, man of many talents and awards plus, he knows a few things about chess, making videos, and writing books. We will have items for autographing and we don’t mind if you take his picture (with him).
FIRST CLASS CHESS CELEBRITIES
Our Chess Events are known for having the History Makers. Such as: GM Kavalek who has written for the Huffington Post. Then there was GM Gufeld who was world wide famous for his Mona Lisa of Chess (La Giaconda). After that came GM Rowson who topped off his appearance here by winning the World Open, the British Championship, and the Scottish Championship in short order. In 2004 we had GM Yermolinsky (several times US Champion and champion story-teller). The next tier of chess personalities included Ken Whyld one of the world’s leading chess historians and he was from London. International Master Andrew Martin has made many trips to the US via the Quad-Cities and the crowds have loved him too.

P.S. The Simultaneous Exhibition
This is for you to try your hand at playing against Grandmaster Williams. You take a seat on Sunday, board and men in front of you (we supply them). He goes around the U-shaped set up playing all who have registered for the simul. One move is made at a time. Can you defeat the WHIZ, maybe you are a whiz? Find out for just $25 ($20 if you register before March 15). Quad-Citians also love a Good Deal so there is a chance all the seats will be full. You can spectate but there is nothing like playing, head to head against a red-headed, on fire Grandmaster from the British Isles. Be forewarned, he’s one of the most hilarious grandmasters in Chess. Come and see. Come and experience. This is our 12th important chess event in the Quad-Cities since 1998.
There is the Iowa Open in Iowa City the same weekend. This is NOT a tournament it’s a fun event without the stress, the competition, but with the all around camaraderie. Chess calendars are so full anymore and we have tried events from February through October. We had settled on this weekend event before we even knew of the Iowa Open. We hope you will join us… BOB LONG, two-times Quad-Cities Chess Champion.
