TOPALOV IS THE LEADER AT THE SINQUEFIELD CUP! 2-0!

On the cover of thew latest issue of NEW IN CHESS is a photo of the Bulgarian GM Veselin (as Rex Sinquefield calls him) Topalov and former world chess champion. It quotes him as saying “Many players can beat Magnus.” There’s a challenge for you.

In Norway Topalov beat Carlsen. Yesterday in St. Louis Topalov beat him again, this time with out a time control mixup! One of the favorites, Caruana, lost to Carlsen yesterday at the “time scramble gate.” Is Carlsen starting to have time pressure problems? We have to admit, this tournament has some challenging aspects as the players, Elo wise, are the best in the world.

The thing is, Topalov can play some demonstrably great chess without Danailov, and there have been no books on him!

As a chess bookseller I can say that over the years chess biographies do pretty well and I hope there are more of them. The new series by Karolyi on Tal is quite excellent! #2 should be in soon. If you send me an e-mail (info@chessbutler.com) and put CHESSSECRETS in the subject line AND use your full name to ask for the Special JUL-AUG news letter, you will be sent that Double issue FREE!

I’ve been typing everything in the past two months with one finger, so I hope you will bear with when you find typos.

  1. WELL YOU GOT ME! I have seen this book cover! I should have been more definitive about what I meant in constituting a biography. I’m sure this is just a bunch “unannotated,” or nearly so, games and next to no historical or biographical info. In other words, a “non book” about an outstanding player who deserved more.
